A morning with my team
For most of my career, when something needed doing, the answer was to go find the person who did it. That's what a company is. You hire people, they hold the parts you can't hold, and the whole thing works because nobody is carrying all of it at once. Small businesses don't get that. When you're small you are the marketing department and the finance department and the person who books the meeting and the person who files the receipt, and the problem was never that any one of those jobs is hard. It's that there are eleven of them and they all show up on the same Tuesday morning.
So that's why I didn't want another tool. I've bought plenty of tools over the years and every one of them left the work exactly where it was, just sitting behind a nicer interface. I wanted a team.
Here is what that means mechanically, because this is the part that takes people a second. My EA has its own email address. Not mine, its own. It isn't perched on my shoulder reading over me while I work, it's sitting on the inboxes I've given it, doing things while I'm somewhere else entirely.
Last week I asked it to book a meeting, and that was the whole of my involvement. I didn't send the invite, and I didn't do the is-Thursday-better-for-you-or-Friday dance that somehow takes four emails and two days to settle. I found out about the meeting the way I find out about all of my meetings, which is that it was in my calendar and I had to go to it.
A new client came in overnight, and by the time I opened the laptop there was a proposal drafted, a presentation built out of work we had already done, and a quote sitting there waiting on me. Drafted. Not sent. (Something confidently emailing my clients at 2am is a genuinely terrible idea and I'd like to state for the record that it isn't this.)
Receipts got logged, which is the least impressive sentence in this letter and quite possibly my favourite one, because they come in, they go where they're supposed to go, and I never think about them again.
And somewhere in the middle of all of that, without being asked, it flagged a handful of people I should probably follow up with this week.
None of this is a demo. That was Tuesday.
What I didn't expect was what it does to the shape of a day. They just don't wait for me anymore. I still open the laptop braced to do all of it myself, and then I don't.
